About the Author

Monk's real name is Walter. His last names have changed based on where he was living. He survived brutal physical and emotional abuse from the age of three. That was in 1939, when times were different, but not so different from today for some readers. You will see him abandoned by family members who no longer would or could care for him. You will see him hunt and kill alligators at age 10, shoot and kill squirrels and rabbits to put food on the table. You will see him struggle to please his step father, doing the chores before going to school. You will see him catch raccoons and other animals and sell them to farm laborers for money. And you will see that he wasn't allowed to keep the little money he earned. He joined the Army at age 17 and later, the Navy, which led him to a fine and honorable life of many adventures and successes It is Walter's hope that readers of this book, who may be facing a hard way of life now, will be comforted to find that other young people have faced hard circumstances, and that they may find hope in reading how Monk overcame his difficulties with courage and determination.

A very touching book that brings attention to the life of mostly young Monk and the neglect and abuse that he endured and overcame. One of the things that brought back to my attention is that many times children don't even know that they are being abused. They just think that what is happening to them is just normal, until they see something different. This book took you down a dark path and then brought you back to light. A story of resilience and tenacity. It also had some very interesting things about mid century Florida life and survival without much. I thoroughly enjoyed the book.

A true story of the manner in which a young person endures so many hardships early in life and continues to see many positive sides of it. This book will take the reader through Monk's formative years. He lived with many different relatives and more than earned his 'keep' by taking care of cows, pigs, horses and even poaching 'gators' during the night. And, yes, he was abused both physically and mentally and to this day carries the scars of those days.In 'Monk's Journey', Walter finally escapes his existence and joins the US Army at the age of 17. After serving his three years, he eventually joins the US Navy and stays until he is transferred to the Fleet Reserve in 1979.For me, this is a story of a young man with a positive feeling around him. It tells of his journey overcoming much adversity and always by maintaining a positive attitude. His water glass was 1/2 full instead of 1/2 empty. Try and imagine yourself in his shoes at an early age. Then, how would you feel about your life? Would you be full of pessimism or optimism?Well, Walt, my Navy CPO hat is off to you for overcoming your 'biscuit-stealing, boot-legging, gator-poaching' days~!Well done, Shipmate and may there always be fair winds and following seas throughout your future days.Highly recommended.

As an extremely busy person I am very picky regarding what I choose to read. This story had me hooked within the first two chapters and I read it very quickly. The start of this young man's life was so sad and disturbing that I had to keep reading and hoping for a happy ending for all that he had to endure at such an early age. A lot of people, I believe, would have turned out differently than this man did. Please do yourself a favor and read this story. You will be glad that you did! I am!

After hearing so many good things about this book I decided to purchase it. I can truly say I was blown away by this true story in "Monk's Journey". I could not put this book down!
