Since reading Panzram, this book has been on my Amazon recommendations. I was sort of confused as this book is classified as "homosexual pulp" and I guess much of that has to do with the licentious back cover, talking about "forced homosexual bondage".And while this book does cover the author's experiences with interesting same sex prison relations, it never goes into much detail on the acts involved, but has a journalistic sort detachment from the beginning to end of the book. People hoping to buy this book to get trashy sex details are going to be disappointed. What really stays with me from this book is the helplessness George Viereck feels as he is swept up in World War Two patriotism laws that are central to his experience. George was a German translator involved with some questionable contacts, but his case was sensationalized and it's questionable how fair his trial was.Ultimately this book is haunting to anyone who knows about how awful prison systems are. From reading a book describing a prison lifestyle in the mid 1940s America, nothing has seemed to change much, including the prison rape, institutional racism and severe poverty most "criminals" come from.I am not sure how accessible this book is to most people, as it's high price makes it hard to budget for. I found a very torn copy for 8 USD, otherwise I would not have bothered. As it turns out, with my interests in criminology, history, WW2 and prison in general, it was a great purchase that I would recommend to anyone with similar interests.
