Review

“Gorgeously written. . . . Sengupta lays out the enormous challenges India faces. But she remains optimistic that the young generation will continue to push the country toward more meaningful progress.” - Seattle Times“[Sengupta] marvels at the resulting ambition and ingenuity, while also observing the power of residual caste and gender prejudices.” - The New Yorker“Thoughtful and timely...Sengupta balances strong impartial analysis with emotional investment.” - Wall Street Journal“Portentous...Returning to a transformed nation--its economies in bloom, its cities abuzz--[Sengupta] sensed a fresh impatience of aspiration....Vibrant.” - New York Times Book Review“Sengupta does a wonderful job of detailing the distinct lives of seven young individuals struggling to fulfill their educational and economic dreams…Highly recommended.” - Kirkus (starred review)“Anyone who imagines that India today is simply a land of IT companies and call centers should read this book. Somini Sengupta sees the new India in all its complexity―its gated towers and remote villages; its kidnapped maids and chief ministers; those who want to remake it into a Hindu nation and those who care only about getting ahead. India is home to nearly a fifth of the world’s people―few places will be more important to the shape of the twenty-first century. The End of Karma, with its vivid storytelling and intimate portraits of India’s younger generation, is a riveting vision of the future.” - Larissa MacFarquhar, author of Strangers Drowning“The End of Karma brilliantly opens the door into the world of the striving young men and women of the new India as they try to shed India’s past and invent their own future. Somini Sengupta’s chosen characters are so vividly drawn and so sensitively reported.” - Tina Brown“The End of Karma is the essential beginning for any reader who wants to understand the future of the world’s biggest democracy. With meticulously researched, grippingly told stories about youth in today’s India, Sengupta’s quest to understand her daughter’s birthplace seized me like no other book coming from the country today.” - Suketu Mehta, author of Maximum City: Bombay Lost and Found

As someone who has been interested and involved in the Indian subcontinent for more than 30 years, I am always on the lookout for original insights about this complex part of the world. Somini Sengupta's book "The End of Karma" drew me in and never let go -- I finished it in three sittings, during a trip to India, in fact. Its insights drawn from a handful of case studies of young people shaking up India in ways large and small make for a great book. Anyone trying to understand the future of this country that is destined to shape the world over the next 100 years would benefit from reading this slim and highly satisfying volume. I found the first and the last case studies, and the opening chapter that sets the context, to be the best parts, but each chapter has its special gifts.

This was a well written enjoyable read that was informative without being boring. I sent a copy to my friend in Jodphur India to see what they thought of it and they said it was "Spot On." (I believe that means it is accurate.) Even if you do not have any reason to read up on India for work this is an entertaining read for anyone who wants to talk about more things that tv commercials and romance novels (although there are some nicely written ones out there). But this for your library and for your mind!

For anyone who has allowed India under their skin, this book weaves through the lives of several young people - the future of India - and, in doing so, helps us understand both India's past and present.

This excellent book provides a detailed picture of young people in India, their thinking, their mobility, their plans for their future. The future of our planet will be in the hands of young people from India, China, Brazil, Mexico, and many other rising countries.

A well-written and engaging account of modern India from 7 different perspectives. Its fast to read, informative, and interesting. Can't recommend it enough.

I read this book in preparation for a study abroad program to India. Having visited the country many times, and having grown up around family that live and grew up in the country, I didn't realize just how much I still had to learn about how its current state of being came to be and why. Thank you to the author for providing me this introduction.

Sengupta makes very interesting observations of the change that is happening in India.

This book completely changes my impression about India. Its future is promising but it has so many problems to solve.
