Get Jiro!, by Anthony Bourdain Joel Rose

Review

"'Get Jiro!'" unfolds in a dystopian version of Los Angeles where today's (mostly) polite and academic discussions about food have evolved into grisly gastronomic feuds.... In some ways, "Get Jiro!" represents a coming-full-circle thing for Mr. Bourdain."—The New York Times"What's an ex-yakuza enforcer turned sushi chef to do, ask culinary expert and author Bourdain (Medium Raw) and co-writer Joel Rose (La Pacifica) in this boisterous lampooning of food culture, a pet project for Bourdain, who seems to revel in the unrestrained narrative allowed in a comic book. Their answer will be enjoyable to anyone versed in samurai revenge stories or the films of Sam Peckinpah.... The book's saving grace is the wonderfully clean and detailed art by an all-star team of artists led by illustrator Foss, whose meticulously researched and composed visuals mirror Jiro's precision with a knife and produce equally appetizing results."—Publishers Weekly"Bourdain...promised 'an ultra-violent slaughter-fest over culinary arcane,' and he delivers pretty much exactly that....Bourdain let's his foodie id run wild, extolling the elegant simplicity of a peasant dish like pot-au-feu here and caving in skulls with sauté pans there.  Foss' stubby, dough-faced figures walk a fine line between goofy and thuggish, and fall apart with great ickiness when dismembered. Equal parts blunt culinary opinion-mongering and satiric takedown of the very same chef-worship culture Bourdain helped create, this amusing diversion coasts comfortably in the wake of the standard bearer of gore-soaked foodie comics..."—Booklist

While Get Jiro, the original is a real read for chefs, with a lot of commentary on where the food scene was going back in 2008 (yes it was published later on, but the efforts and atmosphere best reflect then) this comic far better written, and showcases the real evolution Tony has gone through in his writing and worldview...while being more in line of his real viewpoint.Blood and Sushi is the prequel to the previous Get Jiro, and show an evolution in writing that the original lacked. The food scenes are more organic and less forced, feeling as a cohesive piece, acting as a tie to the complete narrative. In addition, the uses of violence, background characters and character drama reference classics in Japanese cinema, while also setting up the tone known best in Get Jiro. Never mess with the chef.In addition, this showcases a serious character drama that better reflects the character at an earlier stage in his life, one that is never easy, but with a great deal more attention to detail on the worldbuilding that led to the original...which seemed like a separate universe than the one we know in the restaurant business today. All of that said, I think both stories are incredible, but this is more approachable to those not in the food business. Know that up front, and get reading already.

Not a big fan of the "manga" genre of comix/grfx novels, but this one piqued my interest enough that I'm gonna read the first one... started by bulking up my Anthony Bourdain library... I like "Hungry Ghosts" {dang! which one came in the mail today?!?!} better... suits my EC/Horror comix "tastes" a li'l more closely...RIP, Tonywe'll miss ya, fer sher

I preordered this ages ago and I forgot about it. Shows up one day and I finish reading it that day.I like it, but it's not as good as the first one.Less about food really, but I do like the little references it makes to food when it does. The visuals are, AWESOMENo regrets though, I love the cover art.

I've been a comic reader for 3+ decades now, though I fortunately fallen off the wagon a few years ago. I read about Get Jiro! on the fantastic web comic, Unshelved, and realized I needed it. So I got it. The story was excellent, the art supported it nicely. Lots of fun, but as most comics like this are, you feel kinda like you spent too much money for a comic. One thing that I thought was awesome cool was that a few days after that President Obama ate at the actual Jiro's in Tokyo during a state visit.

Wow, looking through some of these reviews I've got to say... tough crowd. My copy, which came in today (7/4/12) had me riveted to the couch, going over every single panel in great detail marvelling over the... well, the detail, the visual in-jokes and reflecting on all the Bourdainisms that I've enjoyed spread throughout his non-fiction works and TV series. It's almost like - well, reading a condensed Alan Moore graphic novel only with crisper art re-imagined by way of Zack Snyder. And to address some early reviewer comments, it's a glossy hardcover, full-color throughout - no corners were cut on the production of this book.Very briefly, Anthony's set up a three-way brawl between a corporate-foodie chef's empire (could be anyone), an anarcho-raw foodie chef's empire (Alice Waters by way of Whole Foods) and a sushi samurai who ends up being the accidental fist of the oppressed sushi 'n pho immigrant-food community which, for anyone who's followed Bourdain's books, is his deepest love. Casual Bourdain fans will probably not get some of the best bits (how not to eat sushi, the Maguro Bocho sword, the Ortolan scene) but there's enough background elsewhere for casual foodie readers to follow along provided that they understand where Bourdain's coming from. And that's just it - if they don't, then they're probably missing out because the real pleasure comes from catching all the insider aspects where the author's skewering personality shines through. Be aware however that "Get Jiro" is played with a very dry humor - if you can get past the food-rage, they are there in spades.BTW Jiro, the main character, is almost certainly named after Jiro Ono of "Jiro Dreams Of Sushi" fame - if you doubt, note the attention given to the rice!

I've always been a reader and fan of graphic novels. And I love Anthony Bourdain's food travel shows as well as the iconic Kitchen Confidential & Medium Raw. Never did I expect to see both mediums/voices converge into one project. Great artwork and a provocative, funny, hard-boiled underbelly premise. Love the unique aspects of urban Japanese culture taken to a tongue in cheek extreme. Recommended!

The overall concept of a comic book by Anthony Bourdain is an awesome one. The art in the book is really cool and overall entertaining for the average foodie and Bourdain fan, but the delivery of the story arch was sub-par. Don't expect anything too riveting or grasping in the story, but overall it's a worthy collector's item or coffee table book.

First graphic novel (aka comic book) I've read since I was a kid, waiting for my hair cut at the neighborhood barbershop. Fast forward a half century later... A captivating read with outstanding illustrations and storyline any foodie would fondly enjoy, notwithstanding the creative license given to the plethora of gore comic book fans tend to love. Living just blocks from the intersection Shopulveda and Ventura Bl., the undeniable sushi byway of the world, gave this a Twilight Zone-ish futuristic aura.Like all great comics, it's left itself wide open for a future of sequels that I'll be anxiously awaiting .
