If you are looking for a book that helps you understand why glass does what it does and how to get past copying everyone else's work and creating your own...then this is the book for you. Once you learn all the technical details you are able to use that knowledge to explore and create very complex pieces without the fear of breakage. I read through this book three times and once I understood the processes I jumped in and went buck wild with my pieces. I have had only one large piece break...and that is because I became too confident and I started cutting corners. If you want something that instructs you through cookie cutter patterns and projects, this is not for you. If you want to truly understand glass and are willing to take the time to read and process the provided information so you can create from within...then you will want this book.

Rene Culler's book on both the technology and art associated with glass fired in a kiln is an excellent read beautifully presented. Presently, Ms. Culler is director of the glass visual arts program at the U. of South Alabama in Mobile and has a studio in Ohio. This indicates how talented she is in both the technology and the artistry of glass art. While her book does discuss in depth the technology of glass art, the science does not overwhelm the inspiration contained in the photos of glass art from all over the world. As a nubie in this art form and its science, I personally found both discussed equally in her work. She illustrates numerous art forms that glass can take from all over the world. The simple elegance of work from France to Australia is throughout the work. Pieces ranging from Keen's River (p. 44) which is 130 by 4 feet to much smaller masterpieces indicate the range of sizes art glass can be found. Much of the science and technology are on the cutting edge are discussed and the reader is told how they may use these changes to their advantages as glass artists.No matter how experienced you are in this art form, I highly recommend this book to everyone who is interested in glass art which emerges from the kiln. This book is well worth your investment of money and time devoted just looking at each page in the book. It is my hope that she finds time for another book on this same topic in the near future. I hope you purchase this book or recommend it to your local library. I know you will not be disappointed.

I own just about every book on glass fusing. This book is one of the most technical books of the group. If you can make your way through the technical language you will come away with a good understanding of why glass does what it does and how to better control the outcome. I recommend this book and think the author did a great job. I gave it 4 stars rather than 5 because I would have liked more pictures of glorious glass pieces and perhaps more creative projects and possibilities.In conclusion for a more coffee table type book there are other options, it is a very good technical book.

I have the other famous warm glass book, but this told me much more! It was like taking an involved class. I enjoyed it so much that when I finished I missed the book. I have a much deeper understanding of what the glass does in different stages of cooling and heating up. I'm new at this and my first firings had things going on which other teachers couldn't tell me about. This book covered all those idiosyncrasies. The author knows her stuff, and can communicate it well and clearly. This book will be the cornerstone of my glass library. To speed up your learning process, curl up with this book at night. Loved it! .

This is a very informative book. If you can follow the basics in this book you will be quite successful in your endeavors.I found the sentence structure hard to understand, which made the reading quite difficult to comprehend.I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning to fuse glass.

Glass Art from the Kiln is a great technical resource for the seasoned or novice kiln glass artist. The detailed annealing and fusing schedules are worth the price of the book alone. Rene does a nice job of presenting technical material in a way that is easy to comprehend.The book gives a nice overview of the history of kiln based glass art is given which includes often-overlooked influential players such as Frances Higgins and Edris Echhardt. It was nice to see good info in print that chronicles and predates the 1962 Toledo workshops.I have been working with hot glass for 20 years and find this book to be a great addition to my glass art library. I can't wait to see Rene's upcoming glass-casting book that is referenced in this volume as well. Cheers.

Lots of great info and ideas for fused glass projects

This book is a little too technical for my taste. As a glass artist, I was looking for a book that demonstrated a technique and then shows the results....if you want to understand the chemistry of glass and the forces that affect it during the kiln firing process, this is a good book to read.
