This book is a mixed bag, literally and figuratively speaking. For Neal Adams, the legendary Batman, X-Men and Tarzan artist, you actually don't see a lot of work from those titles. It has a bit of everything, from the old Ben Casey newspaper comic strips to personal works and paintings, but you still wish a bit more are included. The personal commentary is interesting to read.As for the printing quality, some of the reproduction could have been sharper but that's only for a few pieces. I won't pin it on the printer because most of the time, it's how the artwork is scanned rather than how it's printed. The binding is good though, mine's the paperback edition.Ultimately, this book doesn't feel like a collection of the best there is from Neal Adams, so it's a missed opportunity.(There are some pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)
For the Neal Adams fan, I recommend this book. It shows the versatility of Neil's drawing talent which does not only cover comic book artwork. An inspiring book to have and always a great read to go through the book.
I applaud the fact that this book is just as it is described to be. Over the years Neal Adams' work has not worn as well on me as it has on others. I also admit that I knew better than to buy this deluxe edition. As a retrospective it's nice enough and the layout, while over-wrought, is provocative and well suited to today's need for flash over substance. The color reproductions are decent but it's a mixed bag. Most are quite good but the reproduction of his paintings used for magazine and book covers and movie poster art are not as clear and vibrantly reproduced as the newer line work. In fact this lends an annoying aspect of preference towards the newer art. Also, for buyers who are looking for a good number of samples of Neal's stunning magazine covers, keep on waiting. There's a total of only five "savage" paintings reproduced and only two of those are full page images while the other three are 1/4 page and smaller unless you consider the full page detail of the already present full page Tarzan (...and the Leopard Men) another full page treatment. Accompanying those paintings are some of the savage renderings in pencil. Oddly the film and TV section provides more samples of full color paintings. The horror and SF section (titled only as "Horror") is good but again there's a lot of focus on recent work and only a handful of his older work. Again the magazine covers are too few and not exactly prominent. Continuity Studios gets a lot of coverage but the full color paintings used for publications like Echo Future Past, and cover art for The Zero Patrol and others are sadly missing. There are good reproductions of a lot of previously unseen art that are part of Neal's advertising and promotional art. Personally few of these excited me much. Now, there is a section on Theme Parks which I really can't comment on because I see little point to it.The Humanity chapter is interesting and even the very poignant sequential story "A View From Without" is complete and the paintings commemorating the events of 9-11 are still powerful.Chapters Early Work and Ben Casey would have worked better together. The Comic Book chapter suffers (as so many of the others do) because his contemporary work takes precedence over the older work. While I can't speak for his many fans I liked his earlier work better than the current work and his career retrospective deserves better treatment than it receives here, but that's just my opinion. This is a beautiful book but I don't like the focus and the page layout wastes a lot of space better suited to highlighting the artist's long career. It's good but it should have been great.
As someone whose enthusiasm for Adams centers on his earlier DC work, this book felt like a miss. It maintains a heavy focus on past freelance illustration projects and more current work, which is fine, but just not what I had hoped for. The book also comes up pretty short on presentation. The layouts and typesetting are a little wonky, and not up to the standards set by books featuring the work of illustrators with a fraction of Neal Adams' talent. Still, there are some great pieces and pages reproduced here, and some good insights into the artist's career path, ethics and choices. Of particular interest is a Vietnam-era antiwar story, reproduced in its entirety, in which Adams pulls no punches in his effort to impact the reader. The creative technique may be dated, but the work still packs an emotional wallop.
I picked up the hardcover version of this book at my comic shop this weekend. Overall impressions: a very good selection of material and good accompanying text, but the entire production is marred by a lackluster printing job by the Chinese printer. The lack of sharp focus and vibrant colors make a disappointment of some of my most fondly remembered Adams works, such as the famous Dracula Lives cover. Similarly, the reproduction of pencils doesn't begin to approach the beauty of the original publications. Buy this book as a checklist for revisiting the original printings of the featured works.
It would be impossible to fit all the best Neal Adams material in one book. Vanguard's The Art of Neal Adams gives a good overview of Adams' long career. I get the feeling this is to be the start of a series like the Underwood Frazetta series or Barry Windsor-Smith's Opus. I like this book. It is a long overdue major overview release but, I definitely want to see more volumes produced.
