Jack Kerouac has always been a favorite author of mine. Perhaps he is my favorite, judging by the number of his books in my home. I've never read a biography until this one. As other reviewers have stated, it's very detailed. You'll learn much about every aspect of his life: his friends, homes, travels, family, struggles with writing and publishers, physical ailments, politics, dreams, triumphs and failures. The book was excellent, but I found it sad to read about his attitudes toward women and his descent into depression, alcoholism and drug abuse. He knew he was having major emotional problems; at one point he referred to his "melancholia" and "alcoholic manic depression." Having had experience caring for psychiatric patients, I read the book from that perspective. There was much in his behavior suggestive of bipolar disorder, including the attempts at self-medication with alcohol and illegal drugs. The story of his life left me feeling sorry for him. It's a very good book and I highly recommend it, but you may find you don't like the man as much as the myth.

Kerouac: His Life and Work is a most accurate and fascinating account that will further place Jack Kerouac foremost in literary history of the last half of the twentieth century. Paul Maher Jr. writes in his own captivating style to carry the reader along on the back-stories of Ti Jean. This factual and myth-dispelling resource was produced by Maher's extensive research of newly available archives and personal interviews. Also, as in one of Kerouac's books, His Life and Work can be opened at any spot to get a glimpse into Jack's world. The details are here, illustrious along with the grim. The literary record is here including influences, the rejections, the re-worked, and the undiscovered, stacked up in an incredible body of work. Kerouac would be honored by Mr. Maher's book. I felt as though I was living beside Jack as I read all of His Life and Work. Anyone who is a fan or curious to discover Kerouac will have an extraordinary experience.

Excellent read. A well researched bio for both die hard Kerouac fans and those new to his work. Highly recommended.

What this biography brings is a heavy reliance on Jack's journal entries heretofore not available to other biographers. But the assumption this is the definitive biography is a bit of a stretch...because the book is heavily influenced by those notes and the author's knowledge of Lowell where he has lived. Kerouac was above all a creative writer and obviously a great chronicler of events. Even so this does not mean his notes are any more definitive of his life than other information we have about him. He was always writing with foreknowledge or belief someone would be reading his writing. Important junctures in Kerouac's life are given short shrift (his complex emotional relationship with Neal and Carolyn for example) because they have already been written about in great depth and detail--- Instead, the holy grail of Keroauc's notes are determined to be the deciding factor. The author brings up Ginsburg's campaign against Kerouac after his death but never really explores that topic to its justified exposition. It was clear that Ginsburg changed his tune and his memories as time went on after Jack's death..(Look at the quotes in the Subterranean Kerouc). This book lacks capturing the essence and the importance of Kerouac as a writer. Tho Charters book is assumed to be flawed for lack of direct access to documented information, etc-- it still stands out there as trying to capture Jack's essence as well as describing sentinal events in his life. This biography is in need of better editing because events described in one chapter are repeated in another but in a slightly different time frame (such as the books Jack was reading at the time). Lastly, tho I would not dismiss this book like the Subterranean Kerouac, it is yet another take on the Kerouac who was as well hidden during his life as he is now.

Paul Jr Maher's Autobiography of Kerouac is both readable and wide ranging in its survey of Jack Kerouac's life and work. This book pulls no punches and is both thorough and readable. More than this, it evokes the very essence of the man, his history and influences, whose soul is visible and whose aspirations and demands on himself led him to extremes. this book is invaluable to the serious scholar and one of those rare boks that hold the attention from beginning to end.
